Phase 2 of our home remodel focuses on the kitchen renovation. This phase documents the full remodeling process, including design decisions, material selections, and the transformation of the space. We first removed the upper cabinets to create a more open feel, and soon after decided to take out the lower cabinets as well due to their poor condition. Once the base cabinets were removed, we discovered extensive rot in both the wood and the wall behind them, requiring a complete replacement of the affected areas. The house, built in 1924, had not been properly maintained in recent years, which contributed to the deterioration we uncovered.
After everything was removed, we added Rockwool Safe 'n' Sound insulation, since the house is not properly insulated and the guest bedroom is located directly behind the kitchen.
While we were deciding on the cabinet layout, Andrea was already picking the finishes. We ended up changing the materials about 29 times… lol. In September 2024, we installed a temporary plywood sink setup, which stayed in place until September 2025. We lived with that solution for an entire year before starting Phase 3.
